Winter along the Mozambican coastline brings one of the most spectacular natural events of the year as humpback whales migrate through the waters of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Guests staying at Santorini Mozambique have the opportunity to witness these magnificent marine mammals during their annual migration, often seen breaching, tail-slapping, and travelling with calves in the warm Indian Ocean waters surrounding the archipelago.
Beyond the whale season, conservation efforts across Bazaruto continue to strengthen this remarkable marine ecosystem. During July, the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park launched a new coral reef restoration research project with the installation of 100 reef stars around Santa Carolina, the first phase of a larger programme that will expand over the coming months. The park also reported a 26% increase in visitor numbers compared with July 2025, welcoming 2,855 visitors while continuing vital marine protection work through more than 600 law enforcement patrols across the archipelago. These ongoing conservation initiatives help protect Bazaruto’s world-renowned biodiversity, including pristine coral reefs, sea turtles, dolphins, manta rays, whale sharks, and one of East Africa’s last viable dugong populations.
