We are at a critical time where, globally, we are waking up to the frightening impact of plastic on our oceans ecology.

We are at a critical time where, globally, we are waking up to the frightening impact of plastic on our oceans ecology. Vilanculos is no exception and as a community we have come together in efforts to turn the tide.

Santorini Mozambique proudly supports the Vilanculos Beach Clean Up Team. The team consists of a group of young individuals who are personally motivated by the cause, as they are fishermen and handcraft sellers. They know that plastics are bad for their environment and their businesses.

Plastic free Vilanculos

We also support a local environmental initiative called Plastic free Vilanculos. This new community driven projects goal is to eliminate plastic and other waste from our sea, beaches and roads.

Current projects include: stewardship for sections of the beach, organizing ongoing beach clean-up and movie nights, connecting with local government authorities and fisher people groups, and investigating options for reducing, reusing, recycling and up-cycling plastic in Vilankulo.

The most recent World Oceans Day clean-up was a great success, making a notable difference in clearing waste from the beaches.

The “adopt-a-beach” programme was implemented and Santorini “adopted” the beach in front of Santorini as well as 200m north of our property and this area is our responsibility to keep clean.

Doing our bit

We are reducing our Villa’s footprint with the following initiatives:

  • We have glass straws with the Santorini logo on for guests to enjoy all beverages with.
  • Consol glass bottles are being used and we no longer purchase the large plastic water bottles.
  • We have introduced bamboo ear buds
  • Our Luxury Shower Amenities Charlotte Rhys uses natural, organic and botanical ingredients many of which are unique to Africa. All their products are biodegradable and bottles are made from 70% recycled material. They partner with suppliers who comply with strict sustainability and fair trade protocols.

We use a recycling company that collect waste from our property on a regular basis. We separate the waste for them, they then collect and all recyclable waste items are taken to Maputo where it is recycled properly. We get regular reports from them with statistics on all the recycled material that is produced by our property.

Our green waste from our kitchens is however kept on the property, processed and then used as compost in our vegetable garden as well as all our flower beds and pot plants.
