As part of our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, Santorini Mozambique has launched a comprehensive dune rehabilitation programme aimed at protecting our coastline and restoring vulnerable dune systems.
The first phase of the project involved the installation of geotextile sandbags (geobags) at the base of the dunes. Filled with local sand, these structures help dissipate wave energy and provide protection against high-water events and further coastal erosion. By stabilising the dune toe, the geobags create a critical first line of defence while allowing natural coastal processes to continue.
To further reinforce the dune slopes, we are installing Enviromat, a wood wool erosion-control blanket designed specifically for challenging environments. The dense natural fibre matrix helps shield the dunes from wind erosion, improves moisture retention, and creates ideal conditions for vegetation establishment.
Once the Enviromat has been securely fastened, Vetiver grass seedlings, sourced from Maputo, will be planted throughout the rehabilitated areas. Vetiver is widely recognised for its exceptionally deep and strong root system, making it highly effective in binding sand and stabilising dunes over the long term.
In addition, a variety of local indigenous plants and seeds will be introduced to encourage the re-establishment of native vegetation. This approach supports biodiversity, strengthens the natural resilience of the dune ecosystem, and ensures the landscape remains true to its coastal environment.
By combining engineered coastal protection measures with ecological restoration techniques, Santorini is investing in the long-term preservation of one of our most valuable natural assets. This integrated approach will help safeguard the coastline, reduce erosion, and promote the gradual recovery of healthy, self-sustaining dune systems.
